Oral history interview with Virginia Moïse Rosefield, 1995.

Interview begins with discussion of Rosefield's parents, Davis De Leon Moïse and Anita Harby. Rosefield briefly recounts Harby family history, mentioning that the first Harby immigrated to the United States from England in 1749. Conversation moves to the Moïse side of the family, and Rosefield recounts a history of Moïses in the United States. Specifically, she mentions her great-great grandparents, Abraham and Sarah Moïse, the first to immigrate to America in 1791. She notes that Abraham, a Sephardic Jew, had been fulfilling his duties as a Spanish ambassador to Santa Domingo when a slave uprising forced him and his wife Sarah to flee to America. The couple settled in Charleston, South Carolina, becoming the first of a long line of Moïses to make their home in the state. Rosefield next discusses her great grandfather (Abraham's son), Edwin Warren Moïse. The first Moïse to settle in Sumter, South Carolina, Edwin was fondly known as "the General," although he never rose above the rank of major as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. One of Edwin's sons, Marion Moïse (Rosefield's grandfather,) also fought during the Civil War and followed in his father's footsteps as a Sumter lawyer. Rosefield fondly recalls time spent with her grandmother, Marion's wife, Isabel De Leon Moïse, and describes attending Sumter's Temple Sinai with Isabel on occasion. Further details of Moïse family history follow, and Rosefield mentions her own father, Davis De Leon Moïse (oldest son of Marion Moïse) who also became a successful lawyer in Sumter and later a state legislator. Interview continues with Rosefield's memories of growing up in Sumter. She recalls that her family was not particularly religious and she and her brother, Marion, only attended temple when their grandmother was in town, although they were confirmed at the reform Temple Sinai. Rosefield recalls childhood friends, many of whom were non-Jews as Sumter's Jewish population was not large at the time, and describes household servants who ran the family home during periods when Rosefield's mother, Anita, was ill. Interview ends with discussion of Rosefield's adult life and the changing state of Temple Sinai. She describes meeting and marrying husband, Herbert Rosefield of Rhode Island, and notes that she learned about Jewish ritual from the Rosefield family, as her own parents did not practice many ceremonial rituals of the Jewish religion. Other discussions of Rosefield's childhood, college days and further family history are interspersed throughout interview.
